Whidbey Telecom News - Get Ready to Change the Way You Dial Your Local Calls

Western Washington will be getting a new 564 telephone area code this year. However, no existing phone numbers will change.

Population growth and the proliferation of mobile devices mean phone numbers for new customers are running out in the existing 360 dialing prefix. The North American Numbering Plan Administration has forecasted the 360 area code in Western Washington will be exhausted in the first quarter of 2018.

Rather than split the territory and assign half the people a new area code, the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission will “overlay” the new 564 prefix. This method is easier for current customers because all existing phone numbers will stay the same.

One result of overlaying a new area code in the same geographic area, is mandatory
10-digit dialing for all calls, both local and long distance. All calls that are currently local will continue to be local, even though 10-digit dialing will be required.

The 10-digit requirement will be phased in before the new area code launches. Currently, 10-digit dialing is optional. Please start using 10 digits when your dial calls now, so you're used to this step when it becomes required. After July 29, 2017, it will be necessary to include the area code to complete all local calls.

Visit our Area Code Overlay Q&A to learn when the new prefix will be phased in, what steps you'll need to take, and what won't change about your calls.
