Whidbey Telecom News - Increasing Password Security on Webmail

We been taking several proactive measures recently to keep your information safe on our digital systems. One of those steps has been increasing the login password requirements for our eBilling Website and SmartMail voicemail portal. The next one to receive this security bump is the one you likely us the most — Webmail.

New password requirements have been in place for some time, but we'll soon be requiring all existing accounts that don't meet these new standards to increase the security of their passwords. Increasing the length and complexity of passwords not only protects your privacy and personal data, but also prevents spammers from using compromised accounts to spread potentially harmful malware and scams.

What are the new password requirements?
12 characters long.
At least one lowercase letter.
At least one uppercase letter.
At least one number.
At least one special character.

What's the deadline to update my password?
The new password requirements will be become permanent for all Webmail accounts on November 18, 2015. After this date, all unchanged accounts that don't meet the above standards will be reset to a more secure password.

If your password does not meet these new requirements, you'll receive a notification letting you know you need to update your password. You will not be required to so at this time, but we recommend increasing the security of your account at the earliest opportunity.

With all of these new passwords, how am I going to remember them all?
As many organizations you use increase the length and complexity of passwords, we understand that remembering them all can be challenging. Here are some tips:

  • Create a passphrase or use an entire sentence that's more memorable. Consult this article for more advice and methods for creating passwords you'll remember.

  • Use a password manager. These online tools will store all of your passwords and help you generate secure ones. Premium versions have some cost assosciated with them, but most offer free versions as well.

  • Write your passwords down. Sounds wrong, doesn't it? But having your passwords written down in a notebook — and storing it securely in case you forget — is actually better than using the same simple password for every login.

Short Tutorial – How Do I Remove Something Posted On My Facebook Timeline?

Question: One of my friends posted something on my Facebook Timeline that I don't think is appropriate. Can I remove it?

Answer: Yes, it's easy to remove items (Facebook calls them "stories") that you or your friends post on your Timeline. Just follow these steps:

  1. Go to your Timeline and scroll to the story you want to remove.

  2. Click the downward arrow in the upper-right corner.

  3. Choose Hide from Timeline to remove the story from your Timeline. When you use this option, the story will still be on Facebook, but others won't be able to see it. To delete the story entirely, choose Delete.

If you don't want something you're tagged in to appear on your Timeline, you'll need to remove the tag. To do this, click the downward arrow and select Remove Tag. The post will no longer appear on your Timeline, but it may still be visible in other places on Facebook, such as the News Feed.
